A Brand-New Adaptation of the Musical, "Show Boat" opens September 5th
Fountain Hills Theater announces the opening of the musical Showboat. Showboat tells the story of the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River showboat. This brand-new adaptation for a new generation is based on Edna Ferber's 1926 novel, and features the glorious music of Jerome Kern, lyrics and book by Oscar Hammerstein II, adapted by Peter J. Hill. Showboat is a musical masterpiece for our time.
Adapting from Edna Ferber’s novel and the original 1926 musical, Fountain Hills Theater’s Artistic Director Peter J. Hill has fashioned a new image of Showboat. “Well, nearly all the offensive language is gone and any casual racist dialogue is completely stricken.” says Hill. “But we’ve kept intact the basic story lines and, most importantly, the glorious Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein songs.”
Showboat is directed by Peter J. Hill, musically directed by Seikai Ishizuka and choreographed by Andrew McDuff. * Rated PG-13 for some racist and offensive language.
Showboat will play Sept. 5 - 21, 2025. All performances take place in the Noel Irick, Peter J. Hill Playhouse at Fountain Hills Theater, 11445 N Saguaro Blvd, Fountain Hills, AZ 85268. Reservations: (480) 837-9661 x3 or visit fhtaz.org. Individual tickets are $40.00 for adults and $18.00 for youth 17 and under.
